The second instalment of the Wrong Turn series, released in 2006, really turns up the gore factor.
In fact, Wrong Turn 2: Dead End, has some of the goriest scenes in the entire six-film franchise about a cannibal hillbilly family terrorising unsuspecting members of the public who dare to enter their remote area of West Virginia.
Part two is based around the filiming of a reality television series, called Ultimate Survivalist, which brings more fodder and inventive ways to despatch them.
This doesn’t mean the hillbilly family gets it all their own way all the time. In this case musician and part-time actor Henry Rollins plays the host of the television show who also happens to be a trained soldier who gives the flesh-eaters a run for their money.
In this first sequel we also get to see more of the hillbillies, including kissin’ cousins and a gross birth scene. It’s all very silly and over-the-top, but executed well and tongue-in-cheek by all concerned.
There is also a bit of back-story as to how the family ended up being deformed and gaining a taste for human flesh, which isn’t really that interesting.
The gore factor includes two people being shot through the head with a single arrow, another person being cut in half, another blown up at close range and a particular gruesome end for one of the heroes.
All in all, pretty good fun for the hard-core fans.
