Korean violence hits a high note

Project Wolf Hunting  ★★★½

Project Wolf Hunting is another example of just how far Korean film-makers will go in the name of entertainment.

This grotesquely violent 2022 sci-fi action thriller is set on a cargo ship being used to transport a bunch of dangerous criminals from the Philippines to prison in Busan, South Korea.

The voiceover describing the crimes of each villain as they are carefully being ushered onto the vessel has vibes of the similar scene in Con-Air, but the similarities to the American film mostly end on the dock.

Of course the villains slowly take over the ship but what none of them realise is that it’s also being used to deliver a far different secret cargo – the super-humanoid result of DNA experimentation by the military.

When the creature awakens all hell breaks loose as criminals and prison officers come up against the killing machine that thinks nothing of ripping a man’s arm off and battering him to death with the severed limb.

Blood flows, spurts and splatters copiously as the carnage and madness escalates. Actually, forget about escalating, after about the first half hour Project Wolf Hunting hits 10 and never recedes.

It’s written and  directed with great energy by Kim Hong-sun and stars two high-profile Korean action stars in Seo In-guk and Jang Dong-yoon.

If you like your action frantic, over-the-top and bloody-as all-hell, this is the movie for you.
