FAIR Play makes its intentions clear from the opening.
It wants to be seen as an erotic psychological thriller set in the corporate world, in the vein of films like Disclosure, but doesn’t really have that sensibility at all.
It’s ultimately more of a relationship drama, spiced with a bit of sex, but focusing on the ramifications of gender types being reversed.
Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich play analysts working at a cutthroat hedge fund firm who have managed to hide the fact they are a couple so as not to negatively influence their future careers.
But when Emily’s trajectory exceeds Luke’s and he becomes in danger of even losing his job, the relationship starts to crumble.
Taken as a psychological drama it’s actually a pretty decent watch that builds to a strong climax that will be problematic for some audiences.
Best of all is the always dependable Eddie Marsan as the ruthless company boss.
