AARON Eckhart exercises his acting chops as bare knuckle fighter Jack ‘The Butcher’ Bouche in the southern noir drama Rumble Through The Dark.
He plays a psychologically tortured alcoholic trying to gain some semblance of self-respect by getting enough money together to stop the foreclosure on his family property.
Long estranged, Bouche manages to get the required money together through luck at a casino but is then robbed.
He is also forced to do another job by crime matriarch Big Momma, well played by Marianne Jean-Baptiste, who he is heavily in debt too.
When Big Momma tells Jack “God ain’t cooperating with you anymore” we know she expects that debt to last’.
The directing team of Graham and Parker Phillips use the locations well and create a good sense of atmosphere aided by an impressive music score.
Eckhart is very believable in the lead role but the most unfortunate thing is the constant difficulty trying to understand what he is saying.
I hate to suggest it, but maybe use sub-titles as well to make sense of the mumbling in the dark.
