Wonka ★★★½

FAMILY films or musicals are not my first choice, but Wonka is a pleasant surprise, despite being in both genres.

Timothy Chalamet shows his versatility in the lead role of the gifted, idealistic young chocolate maker who arrives in the city with 10 gold sovereigns and big dreams.

But his generous spirit quickly sees him not only losing all his money but becoming indebted to an evil landlady, played with relish by Olivia Coleman.

While he and others are held captive to work off their debt, Willy devised a plan whereby he can still escape during the day to sell his amazing chocolates and fulfill his dream of opening his own shop.

Opposing him is a cartel of three chocolatiers who have the local police in their pay.

Paul King’s film is a joy throughout with a captivating story, bright and magical visuals and just the right amount of musical numbers.

Aside from Chalamet and Clarke others in the cast include Matt Lucas, Jordan Peele and a brilliant Hugh Grant as the Oompa Loompa.

Grab the kids and enjoy yourself.
