AMERICAN comedy Joyride had me almost until the end. ★★★½
Its irreverent and crude humour is particularly effective in the Korean and Japanese settings.
The characters are engaging and the situations they get themselves into are fun.
But, in her feature directorial debut, I guess Adele Lim didn’t have the clout to push back on delivering a typically trite and feel-good American studio ending.
If any comedy deserved something a little different for its conclusion it’s this story of four Asian-American girlfriends on an international road trip that just keeps getting worse for all concerned.
The four main actors, Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu and Sabrina Wu, are all very good, creating their own distinct characters while also working well together.
There is plenty of adult humour and quite a few laugh out loud moments. I just would have preferred it followed through to the very end.
