(Re)Assignment premise defies belief

(Re)Assignment ★★

TALK about suspension of disbelief.

The 2016 noir revenge thriller (Re) Assignment (also known as Revenger) takes the concept to an extreme.

Without spoiling the film, its success hangs almost entirely on a premise involving lead actress Michelle Rodriguez that is not only impossible to believe; it’s plain ridiculous.

Why veteran director Walter Hill chose to go down this path is hard to fathom because, after committing to it, the technical team aren’t employed to do anything creative with the choice.

Hill helmed a string of high-quality hits in the 1970s and ‘80s including The Driver, The Warriors, Southern Comfort, 48 Hours and The Long Riders, but the 2000s have been a lean period.

While there are definitely high points in (Re) Assignment, particularly when it comes to the action sequences, the film isn’t in the same league as his best.

Sigourney Weaver, Tony Shalhoub and Anthony LaPaglia also try their best to make sense of the increasingly odd script.

Only watch if you are intrigued, but I’ve warned you.
