THE impressive cast of American comedy Brothers tries hard but is hamstrung by a script that is only intermittently funny.
Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage are twin brothers Moke and Jady Munger who come from a family of redneck criminals headed by matriarch Cath, played by an almost unrecognisable Glenn Close.
The brothers are estranged because Moke was nabbed during a robbery and took all the blame. After serving a prison term he is trying to go straight when Jady arrives back on the scene and entices him into one last job.
They are pursued by corrupt lawman Jimmy Farful (Brendan Fraser) at the behest of his villainous father Judge Farful (veteran M. Emmet Walsh), at the same time as trying to reconnect with Mum who deserted them for her emerald thief boyfriend when they were kids.
The physically mismatched twins gag was done better more than 30 years ago in Twins with Schwarzenegger and de Vito and most of the best laughs come in the first act where the characters and situations are established.
