West’s Maxxxine not quite the perfect ending

Maxxxine ★★★½

TI West’s third and possibly final film of his X trilogy is solid but ultimately a little disappointing.

The first two films, X and Pearl, were very good.

X was styled on the ‘70s slasher but varied to the extent that it examined themes of female empowerment and the pursuit of former glory and future happiness.

It also gave us two excellent female characters, both played by Mia Goth.

In Pearl, West shifted style to ‘50s melodrama and more classic horror with Goth giving us the back story of the older protagonist from X.

Both films were enjoyable and clever additions to their respective sub/genres.

For MaXXXine, the style is ‘80s exploitation as we follow the younger protagonist from X trying to break out of porn into mainstream cinema.

If you saw X you’ll know that Maxine was looking to make a name for herself in the adult film industry, which she has achieved in the ensuing years

But Maxine, like Pearl isn’t short of confidence and plans for success and greatness.

In one of the film’s best scenes, Maxine produces a terrific audition for a role in a horror film sequel.

But her path to wide recognition is hampered by her secret past and a serial killer stalking young women.

Goth is again good but, apart from a couple of great scenes, her character has less to do than in the previous instalments.

The supporting cast is full of notable actors enjoying themselves, including Elizabeth Debicki as a film director, Michelle Monaghan and Bobby Cannavale as hard-nosed cops, Giancarlo Esposito as a porn merchant and, best of all, Kevin Bacon as a sleazy private eye.

West again displays his directing chops in recreating a particular time and style of horror and includes some interesting violent moments.

But the final act is a little too conventional compared to the two previous instalments.

A second watch will probably lift the film in my estimation.

Overall the X films are well worth owning, but let’s hope this isn’t the end of Maxine or Pearl.

Watched at the cinema.
