Prey a ham-fisted faith thriller

Prey ★★

WHAT kind of a film about lion attacks doesn’t show any lion attacks?

Answer: A faith-based one.

Prey (2024) is billed as an action thriller but provides little of either.

Ryan Phillippe and Mena Suvari play a husband and wife forced to leave their Christian missionary station after being threatened with death by a militant gang.

Along with three others they manage to get on a small plane piloted by the mysterious character Grun, played pretty well by Emile Hirsch.

But on the trip across the Kalahari Desert they crash in a game reserve and are forced to battle themselves and the elements, including stalking lions, in order to survive.

It’s a decent set-up and competently made, but the film lacks any tension or drama due to the lack of threat.

The only attack we actually see on screen from any wildlife comes courtesy of a snake!

Save me.
