TODAY I start a journey through my personal film viewing history.
The year 1974 is the first I recall being able to produce an accurate Top Ten.
I was 12 and did see some of these films at the cinema or drive-in (numbers 4 to 8) but obviously a few (e.g. Texas Chainsaw) I didn’t see until several years later.
So here we go with 1974:
1. The Godfather Part II. Arguably the best sequel ever.
2. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. One of the best horror films ever made.
3. Death Wish. This revenge story caused much controversy on its release.
4. Young Frankenstein. Mel Brooks at the height of his comedic powers.
5. The Towering Inferno. One of the great disaster movies, featuring the combination of Newman and McQueen.
6. The Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires. Crazy mash-up of horror and martial arts.
7. Juggernaut. Bomb disposal thriller. Great scene: Richard Harris must decide whether to cut the green or red wire.
8. Open Season. Neglected revenge drama with Peter Fonda and William Holden.
9. The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3. Robert Shaw in ruthless bad guy mode.
10. The Yakuza. The great Robert Mitchum in one of his last lead roles.
